A bicycle of mind


A horse carriage may be too old fashioned for today's time, but it is still the defacto vehicle for communication for people living in the Amish community. Modern cars are out there, but it is up to the user to make decision to adopt or not to adopt.

Introducing digital technologies for teaching and learning can be great but it  requires  a radical change in the learners' thought process. That means merely relaunching a course using digital technologies is not effective until learners are given a chance to interact, engage and process information at their own pace. Technology must be considered as a 'bicycle of mind' rather than a mere information dissemination platform. This notion of 'bicycle of mind' was coined by Steve Jobs when he was referring to a research that showed a man on a bicycle is the most efficient way of transporting mass:

He envisioned the potential of interactive computing platforms as a bicycle of mind in terms of learning efficiency. I truly think even the most pessimistic person about using computers for learning will enjoy the experience if we can deliver content in a way that is efficient and purposeful like the 'bicycle of mind'

 The Joy of Teaching  The joy of watching a struggling learner becoming  a confident, self-motivated and technically skilled individual is absolutely rewarding to me. That is indeed the ultimate goal of my teaching activities.
